Wrestling a painting

Work in progress…

What I feel like I need to explain… about making abstract artwork… Something new that’s never been here before. How am I supposed to know what that is? It’s a total process of discovery. It’s often a process of put it down take it away put it down take it away put it down take it away and on and on. I don’t always know what it’s gonna look like. I often don’t. Sometimes it’s a back-and-forth and wrestle it to the ground before I know what it supposed to look like. Before it’s essence is revealed. Sometimes people tell me they find it easier to draw or paint from life. I get that — it’s all there before you and it’s a process. It’s not necessarily easy either but at least you can see what you’re trying to accomplish. Abstract art is something else entirely. It’s a joy, it is a joy to me. Abstraction has been my heart and soul since I was 9, drawing dots on the page. But that doesn’t make it any easier today, funny though that sounds. You can probably tell the piece I’m working on has been a real bear. But as much as I’ve thought about tossing it or setting it on fire or painting over it with white paint it’s still calling to me to finish it as it is. I have no idea if I’ll be happy with it in the end, and yet it compels me, day after day.
