Truth: Painting is a struggle and a joy
This painting is a work in progress. I don’t usually share works in process since they’re not done and so, not ready for viewing, but I thought I’d post this one, unfinished as it is, and share a little bit about the process- my process, anyway.
Making art is, in part, problem solving. A great part, actually. The process of painting an abstract painting often goes like this: You start> you’re liking it > you love it > it starts to go downhill> you try to save it > you struggle> struggle> struggle> it starts to look a little better> it starts to become itself> you keep at it, looking, working, looking > work some more >leave it feeling good> return and nah, still not right > look so more >paint some more > and so it goes until the painting becomes who it was always meant to be. It’s like that.
A lot of painting is looking, contemplating, considering. I stand at an easel and constantly move back-and-forth, back and forth, gaining perspective with each stroke. Each change on the canvas is reflected in the entirety of the painting. Each stroke changes the whole.
So this is a little synopsis of my process. And for me, after a lifetime of art making, I’m grateful every day for the opportunity.
This painting will be for sale on my website when it’s completed, whenever that may be… www.laurenraderart.com.
